An Insight into Alibaug Tourism

A Beautiful Beach Destination in Konkan

Alibaug, also spelt as Alibag is a well-known coastal town tugged in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. Just at 110 km from Mumbai, Alibag is a favorite weekend-getaway for Mumbai locals and is lovingly called “mini-goa”. The town experiences high tourist footfall all-round the year. Soaked in colonial history, Alibaug is all about sandy beaches, clean air and plenty of forts and temples of the bygone era. No doubt, it is a small town but it has so much to offer that you will always be busy with sightseeing and activities. The place is dotted with many beaches, which are few minutes driving distance from each other. However, the most visited one is the Alibaug Beach for its sunset & sunrise views and for Colaba fort as well. To visit Colabo Fort, you have to take a short boat ride from Alibag Beach. Other beaches here are Nagaon Beach and Kihim Beach, which is any photographer’s paradise. All beaches here have a number of water sports facilities and are very popular for the same.

This coastal town is one of the group of villages, which were called "Ashtagare" earlier. Alibag and these villages were hinterland of Bene Israeli Jews. It is said that a rich Bene Israelite man with many mango and coconuts orchards, named Ali used to live here during that time This orchards sprawled across kilometers and therefore locals used to call this place "Alichi Bagh" in local language meaning "Gardens of Ali", and this how the this place got its name.

The prime attractions here in Alibaug, are its beaches, forts and water sports. Alibaug beach is the main beach. Though crowed but a beautiful beach to visit. This beach is the route to Colaba Fort (also spelt as Kolaba). Kolaba fort is situated in the sea, around 2 km from the shore of Alibag beach and one can reach the fort easily by foot during the low tide, by ferry or a horse carriage. Around 10 to 12 kilometers from Alibag is Kihim beach, which is isolated and clean beach. Fringed with dense cover of swaying coconut trees, this beach is photogenic. One can rent fully furnished tents for relaxing and enjoy the beach to the fullest. Other sightseeing places here are Mandwa, Kashid beach, and Murud-Janjira beach and fort.

Alibaug town is developing as a water sports destination and a number of service providers are offering more professional services for tourist to enjoy in a safer manner. Rationally, Murud-Jajira beach and Kihim are best beaches for a serene & calm beach experience as they are less crowed and cleaner.
